We are actively recruiting a Case Management Assistant to join our Resettlement team. In this role, you will be the “right hand” to our Extended Caseworkers, helping vulnerable refugee families—including single mothers, survivors of violence, and the elderly—navigate their first critical months in the United States.

If you are organized, compassionate, and ready to do the “on-the-ground” work of integration (from scheduling doctor’s appointments to teaching someone how to ride the bus), this is your entry point into humanitarian work.

Refugee Support Assistant (Case Management) – International Rescue Committee

Role Overview

The Case Management Assistant provides essential administrative and direct service support. You are not just pushing paper; you are helping clients achieve Self-Sufficiency.

You will work under the PRIME project, which focuses on long-term integration for refugees who face high barriers to independence. You will act as a liaison between clients and the complex US social safety net.

Key Responsibilities

1. Client Services & Logistics

  • Health Navigation: Schedule medical and mental health appointments for clients. Coordinate transportation (Uber/Lyft/Bus) to ensure they get to the doctor on time.
  • Benefits Enrollment: Assist clients in applying for public benefits (SNAP, Medicaid, SSI) and follow up on paperwork denials.
  • Orientation: Conduct one-on-one or group sessions on “Life in the US,” covering topics like paying rent, using the postal system, and grocery shopping.

2. Case Support & Documentation

  • Database Management: Enter detailed case notes and service logs into the ETO (Efforts to Outcomes) database. Accuracy here is critical for our grant compliance.
  • File Maintenance: Ensure all client files (physical and digital) are audit-ready, containing all required eligibility documents.
  • Outreach: Research new community resources (food banks, clothing drives, English classes) and maintain a “Resource Directory” for the team.

3. Team Collaboration

  • Triage client phone calls and walk-ins, resolving simple issues immediately and escalating complex crises to the Senior Caseworker.
  • Supervise and mentor volunteers or interns assisting with family mentorship.

Qualifications

We are looking for resilience, cultural sensitivity, and logistical savvy.

Education

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Undergraduate coursework in Social Work, Psychology, or International Relations.

Experience

  • Minimum 1 Year: Experience in social services, customer service, or administrative support.
  • Lived Experience: We strongly encourage applications from former refugees or immigrants who have navigated these systems themselves.

Skills & Competencies

  • Language: Fluency in English is mandatory. Proficiency in a major client language (Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Swahili, Ukrainian, or Russian) is a major asset.
  • Tech: Comfort with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and data entry systems.
  • Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is often required for this role (mileage is reimbursed).

Why Apply for This Position

1. The “Humanitarian” Entry Level This role is the perfect stepping stone. Many Case Management Assistants are promoted to Caseworker, Employment Specialist, or Program Coordinator within 12-18 months.

2. Direct Impact You will see the results of your work every day. When a client finally receives their EBT card or learns how to take the bus to work because you taught them, the reward is immediate.

3. Inclusive Culture The IRC office is a diverse, multicultural environment where you will work alongside colleagues from all over the world.
