Job Description & Responsibilities
The pharmacy team at UHSussex is integrated into the clinical wards. You will not just be in the dispensary; you will be patient-facing.
Clinical Services Role (Band 5):
- Medicines Reconciliation: Check patient drug histories upon admission to A&E or wards.
- Patient Counselling: Educate patients on how to use their inhalers, insulin, and discharge medications.
- Discharge Facilitation: Speed up patient flow by preparing “To-Take-Out” (TTO) medicines.
- Supervision: Mentor Trainee Pharmacy Technicians (Pre-Reg) and Assistants.
Rotational Role (Band 4):
- Dispensary: Accurate dispensing of inpatient and outpatient prescriptions.
- Aseptic Services: Preparation of chemotherapy and IVs (at specific sites like Brighton).
- Supply Chain: Managing stock levels and controlled drug checks.
Salary & Benefits (2025/2026 Pay Scale)
Salaries are based on the Agenda for Change (AfC) framework following the 2025/26 pay award.
- Band 4 (Entry/Rotational): £27,485 – £30,162 per annum.
- Band 5 (Senior/Clinical): £31,049 – £37,796 per annum.
- Enhancements: Additional pay for weekends, Bank Holidays, and late-night shifts.
- Progression: The Trust offers a “Band 4 to Band 5” progression pathway upon completion of specific competencies (e.g., ACT accreditation).

Essential
- GPhC Registration: You MUST be currently registered (or eligible to register within 3 months) as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (UK).
- Note: International candidates without GPhC registration cannot be hired as Technicians. You must have completed the OSPAP equivalent or relevant UK conversion course.
- NVQ Level 3: Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills (or equivalent).
- Experience:
- For Band 5: Minimum 1-2 years of UK hospital experience is usually required, plus ACPT (Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician) status.
- For Band 4: Newly qualified technicians are welcome.
Desirable
- Experience with Medicines Management (MMT).
- Experience with Aseptic preparation or Clinical Trials.
